#35 What causes infertility in the church?

A remarkable number of married women, who lived purely in their youth and desire to have many children, struggle with infertility.

I’ve heard various explanations of why so many Christian women miscarry and have trouble carrying babies to term. Some theories have good evidence to support them, e.g.,

  • Eve’s curse
  • western diet
  • electronics/radiation
  • sin habits

Me? I seem to have a knack for developing theories with absolutely no scientific evidence to back them up.

For instance, I wonder how many of these infertile women’s mothers and grandmothers took The Pill? Could the abortive effects carry over to the following generations?

But I would never, ever ask such a personal question. Would you?

#34 Responsibility of Power

A woman’s sense of “power” (#33) with a man must be balanced with meekness, to be righteous.

Meekness: Harnessed Power

Imagine a race horse saddled, ready to race. The horse has to first submit to entering the confined space of the starting gate. Running too soon on the right track would forfeit the race.

Meekness: Yielded to God

Imagine a woman courted and ready for marriage. She has to first submit to the “confined space” of living away from her husband-to-be. Rushing into a relationship outside of the lifelong covenant of marriage forfeits trust and purity.

#33 How to Flirt

“[My son,] give not your strength unto women or to that which destroyeth kings” (Proverbs 31:3).

  • Man’s chief glory is his strength (Proverbs 20:29).
  • Woman’s power is to make him go weak with lust.
  • As a woman, you have a choice to make when you are with a man. You can:
    • make him feel strong (trust, emotional distance)
    • make him weaken toward you (challenge, emotional proximity)
  • If you purposely make a man weak, he may fall for you, but he may never trust you.

#32 Prone to what?

Come, Thou Fount

“…Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love.”

I refuse to sing these lines of this hymn.

I am NOT “prone to leave the God I love.” My assurance and security was never in my ability to faithfully follow the Lord. Therefore, my burden and fear is not my inability to faithfully follow the Lord.

My hope is in the Lord.

The Lord has made an unchanging promise, that He will faithfully tend and keep His own sheep and cause them to follow Him.

I am a sheep, and I know my Good Shepherd. I will sing of my trust in my faithful Lord, not bemoan my weak will.

“…[Not every man has] faith. But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil” (II Thessalonians 3:2–3).

“And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62).

(P.S. I haven’t liked this hymn ever since I read that the author may have backslidden in later life. If “prone to wander” was his testimony, I don’t wonder!)

#31 Do your parents understand you?

“My parents don’t understand me!”

In a parent/child relationship, it is the child’s responsibility to understand his parents and obey their wishes—not the other way around.

If you try to understand your parents, you’ll discover that they understand you a lot better than you think they do.

#30 Overpopulation caused by under-population

There are not too many children in the world.

There are too few parents: that is, couples who are willing to take on the responsibility of raising multiple children.

The answer isn’t adoption vs. birth control/abortion.

The answer is a cultural change of heart toward children, starting with those of us who believe and follow the Bible.

#29 Too many rings on your fingers

Be Careful, Little One, What You Say

What does it mean to wear half-a-dozen rings on your fingers? (Freedom from commitment? Does it hint at promiscuity?)

What does wearing black leather and rivets “say” to the world? (Tough, independent, rule-breaker, rebel?)

Clothing — Earthly reminder of future body, II Corinthians 5:1–4[10]
