10 Reasons Why NOT to Have Pink Hair
An academic response to Joanne Heim’s 10 Reasons Why I Let My Daughter Have Pink Hair. I wondered if I could find equally compelling reasons from the opposite point of view for each of her 10 points.

1. God gave you a particular hair color. He chose it and wrote it down before you were born! It is perfectly suited to your coloring and pleasing to Him.

2. Changing your natural appearance won’t help you discover your real style. Altering your appearance covers up who you really are and deceives you. It makes you feel sophisticated and adventurous when it is neither wise nor brave.

3. If pink hair is (or becomes) part of your personality, it is only the beginning of a lifetime of upkeep and new experiments. It eventually leads to hiding the beginnings of your crown of glory (i.e., your gray hairs) as an adult.

4. Because it is only the beginning, this seemingly cheap (I mean inexpensive, but I guess I used the better word) experiment will cost hundreds and thousands of dollars in future upkeep and new ideas.

5. Favor (approval) is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the LORD (who lives to exalt HIS beauty and glory) shall be praised.

6. The Lord calls us to holiness (separation). While we don’t live to please and impress other people, your life and appearance is a testimony of your beliefs. What is the first impression you give of your life in Christ? How will people know you have good motives for having pink hair? How will they believe you are different from the weird pink-haired people (seeking rebellion, vanity, acceptance, etc.)?

7. Scientists are still learning about the effects of chemicals on the body. Drinking water out of plastic bottles has been shown to cause brain damage in boys. What might be the long-term results of using strong chemicals on your head to alter the cells of your hair?

8. At some level, changing how you look always changes who you are. You live up to your appearance. If you dressed formally and balanced a crown on your head, you would automatically act differently. Other styles affect you as much as formal attire, but in subtler ways. If you dye your hair pink, you will feel and begin to act more reckless in other areas.

9. If you’re perfectly satisfied and okay with NOT having pink hair, why do you want it? Live happy and healthy without it. Wear a pink hair accessory.
